A private school in Fadeyi, Lagos, suspended academic activities on Tuesday to honour the late Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.
Great Josade School, located in Ereko, Fadeyi, where Ajiboye’s residence is situated, closed temporarily as a mark of respect for the late union leader, who was buried earlier in the day.
A video obtained by newsmen showed a banner displayed at the entrance of the school announcing the closure. The banner carried Ajiboye’s photograph alongside an obituary message.
The inscription read: “Please no school tomorrow in order to honour our amiable brother and father.”
Family members, colleagues, friends and supporters had earlier gathered in Ketu, Lagos, to pay their final respects during Ajiboye’s burial. Videos circulating on social media showed emotional scenes as mourners gathered to bid farewell to the deceased.
Ajiboye died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack by unidentified gunmen on his vehicle in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation had commenced and efforts were underway to arrest those responsible.
“The incident happened on Sunday, and one person died. He is a member of the transport union in Lagos. Investigation has commenced, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the killers,” she said.
Sources familiar with the incident said Ajiboye had visited Fadeyi to meet childhood friends before he was attacked while leaving the area.
