The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to intensify its campaign for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage, saying the welfare of pensioners must be considered alongside that of serving workers.
NLC President Joe Ajaero made the pledge at an event organised by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Abuja, where he urged workers and retirees to prepare for what he described as the ideological and economic battles ahead.
Ajaero said it was no longer acceptable to discuss workers’ welfare without also addressing the needs of those who had completed their active years of service.
“The Nigeria Union of Pensioners is one of the proud affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress. Therefore, your struggle is our struggle, and your welfare remains a priority for the organised labour movement,” he said.
“We are currently in the preparatory stages for a major national struggle for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage.
“However, let me state unequivocally that it is no longer acceptable to discuss the welfare of workers without also discussing the welfare of those who have completed their active years of service.”
He called on Nigerian workers and pensioners to remain united and mobilise for the campaign, stressing that organised labour would continue to advocate policies aimed at improving the welfare of both employees and retirees.
