NPFL Matchday 21: Teams exhibit caution

Wednesday evening’s fixtures produced five wins out of seven and nine goals. With the top two teams clearly ahead and not playing until Thursday, the results did not affect their places.

Rangers scored the only goal of their home game against Katsina United to keep their position at No 3. Finidi George had Chukwuebuka Okorie’s 58th minute strike to thank for making the difference.

In Ikenne-Remo, Remo Stars also claimed maximum points through the only goal of their match against MFM. Sikiru Alimi’s third minute goal made the difference.

It was the centre forward’s first goal since he returned to the domestic scene from his sojourn in Morocco and Tunisia. Alimi proved coach Gbenga Ogunbote in giving the striker his first start of the season.

The Sky Blue Stars leapfrogged Kwara United at No 4; the result of the Harmony Boys’ crash in Uyo where Dakkada FC won 2-0.

Emmanuel Ayaosi struck first for Dakkada in the 34th minute, while Etido Dan added to Kwara United’s pains in the 90th minute.

The outcome of the match lifted Dakkada out of the red zone, moving them to two steps about the bottom four.

In the Abia derby in Okigwe, Abia Warriors prevailed 2-1 at home, but Enyimba still remain seventh on the log.

Abia Warriors positive outcome came from goals by Yakub Hammed (30th minute) and Valentine Odoh (37th), while Pascal Eze reduced the tally for the People’s Elephant just before the first half ended.

Nasarawa United compounded Heartland’s woes at the bottom of the table with goals by Chinedu Ohanachom in the ninth minute and that of Abubakar Abdullahi (74th minute).

Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars disappointed their home fans with barren results against Akwa United and Gombe United respectively.

Thursday will witness the resumption of the leadership race between Rivers United and Plateau United.
