Ondo holds final of primary schools sports competition

Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has concluded plans towards holding the final of Basic Education School Sports (BESS) competition as scheduled on Wednesday.

The event, billed to hold at the Sporting Arena of St Thomas Aquinas College School, Akure, the state capital, will see all the winners that emerged from zonal finals in both track and field events from Akoko, Owo, Akure, Ondo and Okitipupa slugging it out to pick the athletes that will represent the state at the regional final in Ibadan and the national finals Abuja before the end of the year.

According to the Director of Social Mobilisation, Mr. Julius Adebayo, the participants were drawn from preliminaries and zonal levels of the competition in several sports including Ludo, Ayo, Table Tennis, football and tracks and field events.

BESS, which is being sponsored by the Universal Basic Education Commission, Abuja in partnership with the state SUBEBs as a national programme, is taking place simultaneously in the 36 states in the country at the same time.

Adebayo explained further that the sporting competition was designed for learners in public primary schools to bring out the best in them since all works without play is not good for their cognitive and psychomotor development.

Expected as Special Guests and of Honour are the state Commissioner for Education, Pastor Femi Agagu and the Executive Chairman of Ondo SUBEB, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan.

Others are the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, Mr. Dele Akinnagbe; top government functionaries, education secretaries from the 18 Local Governments Areas and lovers of sports.
