The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has described the death of the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Lekan Alabi, as “devastating and heartbreaking”.
Chief Alabi died in Lagos on Saturday morning at the age of 76.
Until his death, he was a veteran journalist and former press secretary to several governors of Oyo State. He was also widely recognised for his contributions to public relations and his advocacy for the preservation of Ibadan’s customs and traditions.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, in Ibadan, Oba Ladoja recalled growing up with the late chief in the Born Photo area of Isale-Osi, describing him as an exceptional individual with an extraordinary memory.
According to the monarch, Chief Alabi frequently shared stories of their childhood and remained deeply committed to promoting the cultural heritage of Ibadan throughout his lifetime.
Oba Ladoja also praised the late traditional chief’s contributions to journalism and public service, noting his dedication to matters relating to Ibadan’s customs and traditions.
“When I was acting Chairman of the Ibadan South East Traditional Council, I recalled that Chief Alabi was a stickler for time and a robust contributor to traditional and customary matters,” the Olubadan said.
Describing the loss as a significant one for Ibadanland, Oba Ladoja prayed for the peaceful repose of Chief Alabi’s soul and for God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
