Veteran broadcaster and media executive Ovieteme George has been praised for his remarkable contributions to journalism and his recent initiative to honour retired journalists from Bayelsa State with cash gifts and recognition awards.

The commendation follows a special event held on February 14, 2026, at the sports complex in Yenagoa, where retired journalists of Bayelsa origin were celebrated in what has been described as an unprecedented gesture in the state’s media history.

According to accounts shared with Breezy News, George has earned widespread respect throughout his journalism career for his fearless and impactful reporting. He was particularly noted for his daring coverage of militant activities in the Gbaramatu axis of the Niger Delta, where he ventured into militant camps to obtain firsthand accounts of the region’s security challenges.

He was also recognised for his investigative reports on crude oil bunkering, exposing illegal operations, tracing supply routes, and highlighting the broader networks believed to profit from oil theft in the Niger Delta.

Another report that attracted praise was his coverage of the Rwandan genocide memorial in Kigali, which observers described as emotionally compelling and comparable to the solemn experience of visiting Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial.

George, who previously served as General Manager of AIT Yenagoa before moving to Arise News, has long been regarded as a journalist committed to professionalism, factual reporting and courageous storytelling.

At the February gathering, retired journalists were first treated to a novelty football match organised in their honour before the event took an unexpected turn.

One after another, the retirees were called forward to receive commemorative plaques alongside cheques of ₦1 million each.

The biggest surprise came when five veteran journalists aged over 80 were presented with ₦5 million each in recognition of their pioneering contributions to journalism.

Among those honoured were Lindsay Barrett, Thompson Oyatu, Hall Morowei, Stanley Max-Egba, and Tons Fetepigi, who was represented by his daughter.

The presentations reportedly drew emotional reactions from recipients, many of whom expressed gratitude for the recognition after decades of service to the profession.

Observers also noted George’s determination despite his physical condition. He attended the event on crutches after reportedly sustaining a serious injury during a novelty football match last year. Assisted by his wife and friends, he addressed the gathering and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting journalists and preserving the legacy of media pioneers in Bayelsa State.

The initiative is understood to have been supported by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, the pipeline surveillance company operating in the Niger Delta.

Media stakeholders who spoke about the event described it as a landmark intervention that highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of retired journalists. They said the recognition not only celebrated pioneers who helped tell the Bayelsa story over the years but also underscored the need for greater institutional support for media professionals.

The event also featured large display billboards bearing the photographs of the honourees, a gesture many recipients described as both memorable and deeply appreciated.

For many attendees, the gathering served not only as a reunion of colleagues but also as a celebration of journalism, friendship and service—an occasion that many believe has set a new standard for recognising retired media practitioners in Nigeria.

Breezy News understands that the event has continued to attract commendation from journalists and media stakeholders, who view it as one of the most significant private initiatives aimed at celebrating retired journalists in Bayelsa State.
