The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Abdullahi Usman, in connection with the killing of a lecturer at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, Professor Gabriel Nyityo.
Professor Nyityo, a renowned History lecturer at the institution formerly known as Benue State University, was reportedly killed at his residence in the Adaka community of Makurdi Local Government Area in the early hours of Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday that the professor’s younger brother, John Nyityo, was also killed in the attack.
According to the police, officers attached to the ‘D’ Division received a distress call from the Adaka area and responded to the scene, where they discovered the bodies of the two victims.
“One Prof. Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, male, aged 58, and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo, male, aged 19, were killed by unknown gunmen,” the statement said.
Edet disclosed that Abdullahi Usman, 23, from Awe in Nasarawa State, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
“The suspect, one Abdullahi Usman, 23 years, of Awe, Nasarawa State, has been arrested in connection with the crime and investigation is still ongoing to get the remaining suspects,” the police spokesperson added.
The police said investigations are continuing as efforts intensify to apprehend other individuals linked to the killings.
