Site worker unaccounted for in Lagos 7-storey collapsed building (See Video)

An adult male is unaccounted for in the seven-storey collapsed building in Banana Island, Ikoyi area of Lagos, which happened on Wednesday.

The building caved in when some of the construction workers on site had closed for the day.

According to the situation report by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, “a head count carried out by the CSO Anthony Onah of the construction site has an adult male unaccounted for. His where about is unknown”.

Some of the site workers were however injured as a result of the collapse.

LASEMA said it activated its response plan immediately it got information about the incident, and upon arrival at the scene of the incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu said that “inspection revealed that the building was damaged by a cement mixer truck, which drove into the building columns.

“Operation ongoing: Agency’s excavator, forklift are on site while crane is enroute”.

LASEMA promised to provide an update on the situation.

The state government has however said it has begun an investigation to unravel circumstances surrounding the collapsed building.

In a statement, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Mukaila Sanusi said the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins was on the site to assess the situation and flag off the investigation.

He added: “A seven-floor building under construction has collapsed in Banana Island, Lagos State, this evening.

“Few persons who sustained injuries are being treated. There is no fatality. This unfortunate incident happened while casting was being done.

“We ask members of the public to remain calm and expect further information from the ministry as we know more”.
