Spain’s World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente is set to sign a new contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until the 2030 World Cup.
According to Reuters, De la Fuente has agreed to extend his contract after leading Spain to back-to-back major international titles.
The 65-year-old guided La Roja to victory at Euro 2024 before overseeing their triumphant 2026 World Cup campaign in July. His current contract was initially due to expire in 2028.
Since taking charge of the senior national team in December 2022, De la Fuente has enjoyed one of the most successful periods in Spain’s recent football history.
Under his leadership, Spain won the 2023 UEFA Nations League, Euro 2024 and their second men’s World Cup title.
The new agreement would see De la Fuente remain in charge when Spain defend their world title at the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
His record since taking charge has also been impressive, with Spain losing only twice in 41 competitive matches.
De la Fuente’s future had remained uncertain following Spain’s World Cup triumph. Immediately after the final, the coach said he was in no hurry to make a decision about his future and wanted to savour the historic achievement.
Goal had previously reported that the Spanish Football Federation was preparing a lucrative contract extension to retain the coach through the 2030 tournament.
Reuters reported that it had contacted the Royal Spanish Football Federation for comment on the proposed agreement.
