The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh; and the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel have commiserated with the immediate family of sports broadcaster, Mr. Ignatius Ikechukwu Ajuonuma, who died on Friday.

Ajuonuma was a staff member of Daar Communications, owners of Ray Power FM and African Independent Television (AIT).

Enoh and Ahmed also condoned with Daar Communication, and the leadership of the Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to which Ajuonuma was a vibrant member.

In his tribute, the minister praised the sterling qualities of the deceased, who, he said, “rose above his visual impairment to become one of the renowned sports pundits in the country, close to two decades now.

“His passion for his work, the records he reels out whenever on set or on radio, are the legacies he left behind; and those will never be forgotten in the annals of sports journalism, in Nigeria”,

Enoh expressed profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to Ajuonuma’s immediate family, while conveying his deepest sympathy to his colleagues.

He praised Ajuonuma’s unwavering commitment to the sports industry and his dedication to uplifting Nigerian sports and athletes, through his journalistic endeavours, describing him as a trailblazer who did not allow any circumstance to put him down.

The minister said: “Ignatius Ajuonuma, whose illustrious career spanned several years leaves an indelible mark in sports journalism. His contributions to sports reporting, analysis, and commentary at Daar Communications leaves an indomitable legacy in the world of Nigerian sports.

“His extensive knowledge and passion for sports, coupled with his ability to communicate the excitement of sporting events to the masses, made him a beloved figure in our nation. Inspite the challenges that surrounded him, he was never put down by them”.

Enoh also paid tribute to SWAN, particularly its Lagos State chapter, and noted that Ajuonuma’s legacies would continue to inspire future generations of sports writers.

In a condolence message by NOC’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tony Nezianya, Gumel described Ajuonuma as a dedicated sports journalist, who made significant impact in sports reporting.

The NOC President urged his Ajuonuma’s spouse, Daar Communications and the entire sporting fraternity to accept his heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.

Gumel said: “Ajuonuma’s unwavering commitment to his profession was truly exceptional, especially considering the challenges he faced as a blind individual.

“His determination and refusal to let his visual impairment hinder his contributions to the growth and development of sports journalism were truly inspiring. Despite this handicap, his work remained of the highest calibre, demonstrating his immense talent and passion.

“As a dedicated sports journalist, Ikechukwu’s impact can never be overstated.

“His insightful analysis, clear communication, and thorough coverage of sporting events enriched the industry and captivated audiences.

“He played an integral role in bringing the thrill of sports to the masses through his work with Daar Communications, operators of Ray Power and African Independent Television (AIT).

“He was a beacon of knowledge and expertise, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of his colleagues and avid sports enthusiasts alike.

“Ajuonuma’s exceptional contributions were not limited to his professional life alone. Known for his unwavering commitment, he was admired and respected by those who were fortunate enough to know him personally. His kindness, empathy, and genuine concern for others were qualities that set him apart and made him an exceptional human being.

“During this time of profound grief, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May you find comfort and solace in the memories of Ikechukwu’s remarkable life and the immense legacy he leaves behind.

“Though Ajuonuma may no longer be with us physically, his impact will continue to resonate, inspiring and influencing others in the years to come.

“May his soul find eternal rest, and may you find strength and peace amidst this profound loss”.
