The shortlist for the 2024 Time’s Person of the Year award has been announced on Monday.
The list which featured 10 candidates under consideration for TIME’s annual designation, was revealed on NBC’s Today Show.
According to information obtained on Time’s website, the award which began in 1927, has been awarded to “a person, group or concept that had the biggest impact— for good or for ill—on the world over the previous 12 months.”
United States President-elect and candidate of the Republican Party, Donald Trump, features on the 2024 shortlist, alongside the US Vice President and Democratic Party’s candidate, Kamala Harris who lost to Trump in the presidential election.
Trump, who survived assassination attempts in the build-up to the elections, has nominated several appointees in his cabinet which will take effect in January 2025.
Among such is tech billionaire and owner of social media website, X (formerly Twitter) – Elon Musk.
The X owner was appointed to serve in the Department of Government Efficiency, alongside American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy.
On her part, Harris had vied to become the United States’ first female president after Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016. However, critics had blamed President Joe Biden for taking too long before withdrawing from the race to the White House, thereby not giving his Vice ample time to drive home her campaign manifesto.
Also featured on the list is embattled Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu who’s been accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes by the International Criminal Court for its war against Gaza — sparked by Hamas’s attacks on 7 October, 2023.
Another prominent person on the list is tech billionaire and the Chief Executive of Meta — Mark Zuckerberg.
The winner will be announced on Thursday, 12 December, 2024.
