The United Kingdom has opened applications for the 2026 Chevening Scholarships, offering fully funded master’s degree opportunities at UK universities to individuals with leadership potential and a commitment to promoting sustainable development.
The British High Commission, in a statement on Monday, announced that applications for the scholarship programme would run from 4 August to 6 October 2026.
According to the commission, the programme is designed to equip future leaders with world-class education, professional networks and connections to the UK, enabling them to address global challenges and contribute to development in their communities and beyond.
The statement said the scholarship provides successful applicants with the opportunity to pursue fully funded master’s degrees while joining a global network of emerging leaders committed to creating positive change.
For more than four decades, the Chevening programme has attracted hundreds of thousands of applications from across the world, selecting candidates based on leadership qualities, influence, networking abilities and a commitment to building a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future.
The Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Emma Hennessey, said the programme was seeking outstanding individuals who could work with the UK to tackle shared global challenges.
Hennessey encouraged people from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from under-represented groups, to apply, noting that Chevening scholars are selected not only for their achievements but also for their leadership potential and ability to create lasting impact.
She said access to UK education, professional networks and international experiences would provide scholars with the tools needed to address global issues and strengthen collaboration.
The British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as more than an academic scholarship, saying it offered recipients the opportunity to join a global network of leaders committed to positive change.
Baxter said scholars benefit from a world-class education, exposure to UK values and culture, and lifelong relationships with Chevening alumni and partners.
He encouraged Nigerians with a clear vision for contributing to areas of shared interest between Nigeria and the UK to apply for the programme.
The British High Commission advised prospective candidates to submit applications through the official Chevening portal and carefully review the programme’s vision, eligibility requirements and application guidance before applying.
Established in 1983, the Chevening Scholarship programme has supported more than 60,000 professionals worldwide, reflecting the UK’s long-standing commitment to developing future global leaders.
