The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the South African Consulate in Lagos State says it is set to hold a three-minute thesis competition in commemoration of the 2023 Nelson Mandela Week.
The Head of Communications Unit, UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, disclosed this in a press release on Thursday.
The statement said the competition would hold on Tuesday, 18 July 2023, and that it would be open to all PhD students all over the world.
The statement added, “The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies, University of Lagos in partnership with the South African Consulate in Lagos State is set to hold its maiden Three-Minute Thesis Competition as part of week-long activities to mark 2023 Nelson Mandela Week and to celebrate impactful developmental research on Africa by Doctors of Philosophy.
“The thesis competition, which originated from the University of Queensland, was conceived to help PhD students develop skills to effectively discuss their research in three minutes in a language suitable to a non-specialist audience.
“To be part of the competition, interested PhD students are required to submit a video entry or a PowerPoint presentation with a voiceover not exceeding 180 seconds through the dedicated digital application form.”
The statement noted that while the competition was open to all PhD students; preference would be given to topics which address the challenges in Africa, adding that submission of entries would close on 30 June.
It added that prizes included a sponsored week-long research exchange opportunity at the University of Dundee, United Kingdom, for first place; a sponsored week-long research exchange opportunity at Aston University, United Kingdom, for second place and £1,000 worth of research bursary tenable at the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies, University of Lagos, for third place.
