A tanker carrying 33,000 litres of groundnut oil overturned near Ojota Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday, causing heavy traffic around the Alapere-Ojota axis of Lagos.

The incident occurred at about 2pm near Abiola Gardens, with the tanker reportedly overturning across part of the expressway towards Alapere and spilling its contents onto the road.

Following the accident, residents and passers-by rushed to the scene with buckets, jerrycans, drums and other containers to scoop up the spilled groundnut oil.

Some people were seen collecting the oil as it flowed along the road towards the Alapere area.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the police arrived at the scene to manage traffic and prevent further disruption.

The overturned tanker obstructed part of the expressway, causing severe congestion for motorists travelling from the Berger axis towards Ojota.

Motorists approaching the area from Iyana-Oworo also experienced significant delays, with limited space to manoeuvre around the tanker and access the service lane leading to the Ojota interchange.

The cause of the accident had not been established as of the time of filing this report.

Commuters and motorists using the affected route were advised to consider alternative routes while traffic management and emergency officials worked to clear the obstruction.
