Charlton Athletic have confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been invited to join Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The 24-year-old, who is on loan at Charlton from Wrexham, is in line to make his competitive debut for the three-time African champions in the September double-header.

Okonkwo has two senior international caps to his name, both earned during Nigeria’s successful Unity Cup campaign in May. He kept clean sheets in the victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica.

His latest invitation is expected to intensify competition for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping position, with Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye also in contention for the starting role.

Okonkwo has also been a regular starter for Charlton this season, making four Championship appearances so far.

Nigeria will open their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on September 25.

Eric Chelle’s side will then travel to face Guinea-Bissau four days later as they begin their bid to qualify for the tournament.
