Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, on Sunday.
The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and, consequently, the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
Burkina Faso, who had already defeated Nigeria 2-0 during the group stage, completed a double over the seven-time African champions to lift the regional trophy.
The victory also secured the Young Stallions a place at next year’s U-20 AFCON alongside hosts Ghana, who will represent WAFU Zone B at the continental tournament.
Nigeria’s hopes of overturning their earlier group-stage defeat quickly faded as Abdul Maikaba’s side conceded three goals within the opening 15 minutes.
The Flying Eagles managed to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot in the second half, raising brief hopes of a comeback, but Burkina Faso restored their three-goal advantage with a late strike to seal a convincing victory.
The defeat also ended Nigeria’s bid to retain the WAFU Zone B title they won in Lomé in October 2024.
Burkina Faso have now established a recent advantage over Nigeria in meetings between the two sides. The Young Stallions won their 2024 WAFU Zone B encounter in Lomé 1-0, while the teams played out a 2-2 draw when they met in Niger Republic in 2022.
The Flying Eagles had entered Sunday’s final aiming to defend their regional crown and secure one of the two WAFU Zone B qualification places for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
Instead, Burkina Faso’s emphatic victory secured the regional title and left Nigeria facing another disappointment in their bid to return to the continental and global U-20 stages.
