The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Amos Paul, for allegedly using a heated pressing iron to burn the private part of his 10-year-old daughter as punishment for bedwetting.
The incident reportedly occurred in Unaun, Upenme, in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State and came to the attention of the police on Thursday.
According to reports, the young girl sustained severe injuries from the alleged abuse and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Police officers attached to the ‘A’ Division in Owo were said to have swiftly responded after learning of the incident, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the matter had been transferred to the Gender Unit for a thorough investigation and further action.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the alleged act, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable.
“Such an act is barbaric and will not be tolerated under any guise,” the police commissioner said.
Ohagwu reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons from all forms of abuse and exploitation.
He also urged residents to promptly report cases of child abuse and domestic violence to security agencies, assuring that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for justice for the young victim and stricter measures to tackle child abuse in society.
