A section of the newly commissioned LAMECO flyover in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has been damaged less than three weeks after it was opened to traffic following prolonged rainfall.
The 672-metre flyover, commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on 1 July 2026, developed a noticeable depression on one section of the carriageway after an overnight downpour that lasted for almost eight hours between Thursday and Friday.
The affected section of the bridge showed visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface, prompting motorists and motorcyclists to slow down before traffic officials restricted access to the area.
Residents and commuters expressed concern over the condition of the flyover, urging the state government to carry out immediate repairs to safeguard road users and prevent further deterioration.
The damage disrupted traffic within the Osogbo metropolis, forcing many motorists to use alternative routes.
Personnel of the Osun Amotekun Corps later cordoned off the affected section, preventing vehicles and pedestrians from accessing the flyover while officials assessed the extent of the damage.
The incident has attracted public attention because the flyover was inaugurated less than a month ago as part of the state government’s infrastructure development programme.
Reacting to the development, the Accord party in Osun alleged that the damage resulted from deliberate sabotage rather than structural failure.
In a statement issued by its state chairman, Victor Akande, the party said it had received what it described as “credible reports of a disturbing pattern of vandalism targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke”.
“These acts are not ordinary criminal activities but appear to be part of a calculated attempt by desperate elements in the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the remarkable achievements of the current administration ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
“Having failed to match the Governor’s impressive record of performance, these elements seem determined to destroy the very projects that are transforming communities across the state in order to create a false impression of government failure,” the statement said.
The party condemned the alleged acts of sabotage, describing public infrastructure as the collective property of the people of Osun State. It called on the relevant authorities to investigate the incident, identify those responsible if criminal activity is established, and ensure the damaged section of the flyover is repaired promptly.
