The Nigerian Institute of Journalism Alumni Association (NIJAA) has honoured the memory of the late Sir Ademola Adetula, a distinguished alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) and former President of the institute’s Students’ Union Government.
Adetula, a veteran journalist and community leader, served as Editor of the defunct The Republic Newspaper and later as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Hope Newspaper.
NIJAA is participating in the two-day funeral programme being held in his honour, with members of the association attending various events.
At the lying-in-state ceremony held at the NUJ Press Centre in Akure, Ondo State, on Friday, Ayodele Emmanuel Oni, one of Adetula’s classmates at NIJ between 1983 and 1985, delivered a tribute on behalf of NIJAA President, Muyiwa Akintunde.
Oni, who is based in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, highlighted Adetula’s leadership, professional achievements, commitment to service and lasting contribution to the NIJ community.
Akintunde described Adetula as part of a generation of NIJ-trained professionals whose careers made significant contributions to the development of journalism and the wider Nigerian media industry.
He described the late journalist as “a builder, a voice, and a torchbearer”, while recalling his tenure as president of the students’ community.
According to Akintunde, Adetula demonstrated courage, humility and a strong commitment to service while representing students at a time when leadership required both conviction and sound judgement.
He said Adetula championed students’ welfare, promoted the dignity of journalism and established a standard of leadership that continued to inspire members of the NIJ community.
Akintunde also recalled Adetula’s belief that journalism went beyond a profession and represented a responsibility to tell the truth, hold those in authority accountable and serve society.
He said the late journalist maintained his connection with NIJAA after leaving student office, mentoring younger journalists and promoting the values of the institute throughout his professional career.
The association’s participation in the funeral reflects its commitment to supporting members of the NIJ family during significant moments, while preserving the legacy of alumni who made notable contributions to the institute and the journalism profession.
Prince Moboluwade Diesel Ajijo is also representing NIJAA at the funeral ceremonies, while other members of the association are expected to attend the remaining events.
